Scientific Evidence – Meditation:
“There are a number of scientific studies that show the beneficial effects of meditating. Blood pressure comes down. Stress is alleviated. Basel metabolic rate and a number of psychosomatic disorders are relieved and disappear. Moreover, there is increased brain wave coherence, which also improves attention span, creativity, learning ability, and memory retrieval. Also the effects of meditation last into our daily activity, and soon our activity becomes saturated and influenced by the qualities of the unified field.” (The unified field contains all knowledge, and thru meditation we have access to it.) “This is because by experientially knowing something we become it. Once we become it, we begin to embody all its properties.” (From: Deepak Chopra, Creating Affluence pgs. 93 to 94)
Sweat Lodge:
By taking part in the sweat lodge, a person will not only receive the beneficial effects of meditating but also the following: Sweating flushes out from the body the toxic metals, such as copper, lead and mercury, and removes excess salt, a benefit for those with mild hypertension. The heat and sweating also helps ease soreness and stiffness, and dilates capillaries, increasing blood flow to the skin. For all people the sweat lodge will help to purify the body, integrate the physical and the spiritual, and will help one to reconnect with Mother Earth.
“Purification Lodge for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder”:
“The purification lodge is a Native American traditional ceremony known popularly as the sweat lodge. Native Americans prefer to use the terminology of purification, though, since men and women who participate do more than merely sweat. Experiencing the devastation of war alienates a person from his spirit. The purification ceremony helps one regain a sense of well-being. First Americans have long used this ritual to help their warriors, and now share the process with others.”
“That’s a reality that George Amiotte, an Oglala Lakota form the Pine Ridge South Dakota Reservation, knows well. Amiotte served in Vietnam and had a near-death experience there. Upon his return home he searched for ways to restore his own wounded spirit and was guided by Lokota elders to pursue Western medicine and traditional native healing. As a physician’s assistant, Amiotte now specializes in helping veterans overcome post-traumatic stress disorder, (what used to be called combat fatigue). Interestingly, Amiotte has been able to achieve success where standard Veterans Administration programs have failed. Puzzled Western doctors have questioned Amiotte on his success. Amiotte points out that healing is more than physical. Healing takes place on the physical, mental, and spiritual levels, and a medical practitioner needs to consider all three aspects for optimum success. This is something Western medicine fails to do.”
“Another Native American doing similar work is John Joseph, a shaman with the Chinook tribe and nurse practitioner in Washington state, Joseph agrees that men in war have lost their spiritually and that the lodge becomes a safe haven for them, a place to find it again. Everything said in the lodge remains there. Nothing is repeated outside of it. This gives a person a real opportunity to cleanse the heart, and to place things into the fire. The effects are wonderful and long-lasting, Joseph says, explaining that once people start to get their spiritually back, their physical appearance changes. They start to pay more attention to personal hygiene and to their clothing. More importantly, their thought patterns become steadier, without constant intrusions. Their sleep patterns begin to normalize. The purification lodge, in short, works to make people’s lives cohesive and to calm their minds.” (From Gary Null. “The Complete Encyclopedia Of Natural Healing” pgs. 409-410)
My own experiences within the sweat lodge: I felt refreshed and healed, at one with the other participants and the Universe. I experienced memories of being in the womb of my mother. I was energetic yet calm, and I was happy to be alive. I felt comfortable being in communication with our ancestors. I had many very rewarding experiences by taking part in the purification lodge ceremonies.
