Why is Being More Cultured Important? Joshua Hwang
In short: to help you learn more faster, and to bring people together.
Cultural literacy is a common knowledge about important topics in our culture. Things like shared history, literature, science, philosophy and much more. Why or how could such knowledge be important to you?
It's a funny paradox that having knowledge helps you gain knowledge, whereas having little to no information makes it harder to learn more. A great example comes from the book Made to Stick: I can talk to you about a pomelo; it's a fruit. I can describe its size, a bit larger than a softball, and I can talk about its sweet smell. But it's hard to imagine what it is. If I told you however it's like a grapefruit but slightly larger with a thicker rind, you'd be able to visualize it easily.
This assumes however, you know what a grapefruit is and looks like. All teaching builds upon some background information. With increased cultural literacy, my hope is that you would understand references to Freudian Slips and the Turing Test just as easily as you understand a grapefruit.
My further hope is that in learning about events and books and ideas that have helped shape our collective culture, we may be brought together. When 2 people know about Tiananmen Square say, they have something in common to talk about, and are happy to talk to each other. Race, religion, gender, class and all those divisions become less important. The first step, as always, is in your hands. Do you have what it takes to bring your cultural knowledge to the next level? In my heart, I know you do.
